Goldfrapp Awesomeness

I’ve been feeling HUGELY uninspired by music for about the past 18 months (with a few notable exceptions that have really grabbed me – Pendulum, The Black Keys and Kanye West are the only artists that spring to mind that have managed to get me – and keep me – going). Rock music in particular has really let me down – I’ve been to a lot of fantastic dance gigs, but very few rock shows that’ve thrilled me. So on that note, in keeping with the dance theme, I feel that everyone needs to know about this album:

Goldfrapp‘s latest release, Supernature, was an album that I didn’t even think about listening to for a month after I got it. I’d heard quite a few of the tracks on Triple J when they featured it a couple of months back, and thought the tracks sounded pretty good, but that was about it. Forgot that I had it, carried on listening to whatever else I could find.

Until Sunday. Enter extreme study mode, stress, and the need to chill the fuck out. The perfect soundtrack? Goldfrapp. The opening two tracks to this album – “Ooh La La” and “Lovely 2 C U” – are quite possibly the sexiest 7 minutes of music that you’ll ever hear in your entire life. The following track, “Ride a White Horse” (a reference to smoking heroin?), is just the kind of song that evokes images of sleazy-yet-cool smoke filled bars in the mind of the listener. The rest of the album takes you on a journey from chilled out house to lets-go-fuck-shit-up-and-have-a-dance electronia, and everywhere in between. It’s great – really great.

I used to possess a (somewhat unfounded) distrust of bands who took on the name of a member as the band name. But when I think about it – John Butler Trio, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, White Stripes, Ben Folds Five – perhaps these bands adopted their frontman’s name as their own for a reason: because they’re all really f-ing great songwriters. Alison Goldfrapp is no exception.

Now go buy the fucken album, hey? :)
