The first day of semester is always a bit of a rush. I spent most of the day feeling like I was going to spew (yes, students – I get nervous. That’s why I speak so fast that you can’t understand me), and then two brief hours babbling rubbish about the Internet, and now here I am, mentally de-briefed and really quite excited for the rest of semester. Only 11 weeks to go! Woohoo!
As part of the ice-breakers for the week, I asked my students to talk about the geekiest thing about them. I forgot to ask one of my classes to discuss, but the other group didn’t really admit to anything geeky. I was disappointed! Just putting it out there: I watch Rhys playing games (such as Halo 3 and Assassins Creed, most recently) like they’re movies, because despite the fact that I love games, I’m really bad at them. It seriously took me like three days to work out how to kill one enemy in Halo 3 — and that was as far as I got (it was the first level). I gave up on Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Bros Wii when I got to the last level, because it was too hard. I think the only games I’ve ever finished are De Blob and Mario Bros on Gameboy when I was about ten years old.
I did, however, once play a four hour game of Tetris with my sister, on route from Perth to Singapore. I heart Singapore Airlines.
Heading home to finish marking work for the unit I’m just finishing up – I’ve only got a few assignments to mark still, which is most exciting. Then, lawn bowls tonight! I wasn’t going to go, but I think that red wine and a green… green, is exactly what I need.
I’ll leave you today with something super, super cool: Geeky Lego Creations [via @mashable].
(And there I go: blogging about Internet stuff, when I promised that I didn’t.)
